Scope and Contents This poem-object-book-work was created by Albert Dupont in tribute to the 100th anniversary of the publication of "Un Coup de Des" by Stephane Mallarme in 1897. A wooden box contains the book with five removable, acrylic cubes positioned on the spine. Each cube is incised and colored in ink on all surfaces with Lettrist symbols or texts. The book consists of a portfolio paper cover and a nine page essay. A second book consists of translucent acetate pages with handdrawn Lettrist symbols and words within a plastic slipcase. A third translucent acetate book is an actual reproduction of "Un Coup de Des." Because of the transparent quality of the pages, it is possible to view the literary text in a deeper, emerging three dimensional form.In homage to Mallarme, Dupont writes, "Since the famous poem 'Un Coup de des n'abolira le hasard', published at the end of the 19th Century, Stephane Mallarme has opened up the field of all the poetic researches of the 20th Century, specially by...

The binding by Devaux consists of two mirrors with a leather spine; the title of the book is painted onto the mirror with a vertical format twice, one of the titles is a reversed image, i.e., mirror writing. The introductory essay was written by Michel Amarger. The collages in this book consist of fragments of black & white photographs with hand drawn letters, calligraphic markings and hieroglyphics. This is the deluxe edition which contains 5 prints numbered 2/60 and prints on velin d'arche numbered 2/20. The Sackner Archive also holds "The Cyclist" by William Jay Smith published in 1995 by Stone House Press. Jean-Pierre Gillard comments: The youth of the creators of books, once established their glory, have always fascinated those who try to swim upstream to the source. This deluxe edition was printed on Japanese paper and includes a drawing by Spacagna; the other 10 copies were printed on Arches Fidelis paper and do not include the Spacagna drawing. Arkitu signed his name, Arkitu J-B, on the title page and colophon. The prints appear to have been made from silkscreens since some ot the elements appear on several prints in different colors and locations. Arkitu was the younger brother of Jean-Paul Curtay and committed suicide in the Fall of 2008. -- Source of annotation: Marvin or Ruth Sackner.
